Easthampton, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,898. The name "Easthampton" comes from Old English Hæsselfalhpton meaning "place where horses are reared." Easthampton was founded by Increase Mather and his family in 1712 as a small farming village on the eastern edge of modern-day Easthampton. The first gun case company to be established in Easthampton was Fenton & Sons Luggage Company in 1876. The company made and distributed luggage cases for farmers and travelers. In 1911, the company became part of Eibert Roper & Sons Ltd., which became one of the largest suitcase manufacturers in North America before folding in 1980. In 1935, J. Purdy Randolph founded Randolph Incorporated with three employees to produce imitation leather goods under the name Randolph Leather Goods Company Limited; this business eventually failed and Randolph retired from business life in 1965. In 1992, Iwan Soffer opened Soffer's Pistol Shop at 243 Main Street; this shop offered sales and repair services for pistols and revolvers dating back to 1857. Soffer continued to operate his store until 2008 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 2009, Esterbrook Firearms began selling firearms through their website www.estersbrookfirearmsUSA.com; this company specializes in selling import-only firearms that are not available through any other source including retail stores or wholesale dealerships throughout the United States (outside of New England).

Easthampton is one of the most dense towns in New England and is home to two universities: Brown University and Wellesley College. Easthampton's rich history can be found on both its physical and cultural levels. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Easthampton arrived in 1630 from Plymouth Colony. By 1821, there were over twenty-five families living in Easthampton. The town was formally incorporated as a village on March 11, 1827. In 1840, the population of Easthampton had reached 712; by 1880 it was 2,564. In 1830, General Nathaniel Gage divided the Granite State into five districts for voting purposes—Easthampton being within District 3 (now Middlesex). voting began on October 26, 1830 and continued until December 11 due to violence among area residents over property lines changes caused by Gage's move from Boston to Cambridge. At this time only men could vote; women did not participate until after 1870 when they became citizens under the new state law which allowed them to do so without male approval or consent. Easthampton’s location near Reading MA made it an early center for education with several small schools opening up around 1870 including Northfield School (later Wellesley College), Southbridge School (later Saybrook School), West Newton School (later Haverhill Academy) and Easton School( later Brooks Academy). Today these schools continue operations as well as Holyoke Community College & Emerson College located nearby along with many other private colleges/universities that have moved into or are locating their campuses in Easthammons since then such as Northeastern University & Simmons Business Institute etc.. A map of eastern Massachusetts dated 1772 shows that part of present day EasTHAMPSON lies within Dutchess County . On February 25 1776 John Adams sent a letter patent granting easement for "the land laying between Roxbury Bridge [and] Shinnecock River", extending southward about 5 miles towards Marlborough . This grant may have been based on an earlier purchase from Nicholas Carruth who also received an easement for "a piece of land lying between Roxbury Bridge and Shinnecock River" which he sold to Samuel Adams' father Jonathan Adams some years earlier

The first settlers in Easthampton were two families from Ipswich, Connecticut: the Blackstones and the Pembrokes. The Town of Easthampton was chartered on July 15, 1638 by John Winthrop as part of his new colony in what is now Middlesex County. The townships that make up modern Easthampton were formed from parts of Amherst and Northborough Township on May 14, 1802. Easthampton was one of the original eight townships created during the division of Plymouth Colony in 1692 when UTFartland became section 8 of what is now Hampshire County. It became an incorporated town on February 17, 1852 following a vote by its citizens. In 1860, much to the dismay of many residents who saw their incomes decrease as railroads came through town and jobs went away, Easthampton established itself as one of America's "downtowns." In response to growing industrialization in nearby Boston and demand for housing near businesses and transportation nodes such as railroad yards and factories, easthsampton leaders developed plans to subdivide land into tracts that could be leased or sold for development purposes; this resulted in today's neighborhoods such as Southside (northwest corner), Westside (southwest corner),Eastside ( southeast corner), Northside (northeast corner) and Downtown (central area).
