Easthampton, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,699 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Easthampton is located on the southern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and straddles the border of New Hampshire and Vermont. The name "Easthampton" was first mentioned in 1635 when John Eastham bought land in present day Easthampton from Roger Sherman for £100. In 1793, General James Clinton's army passed through the town on their way to battle against British forces at Saratoga Creek. The Battle of Saratoga resulted in over 2,000 casualties including many officers and men from Easthampton who were captured as prisoners of war. In 1836, John Fenton erected a sawmill on the western border of present day Easthampton with power to turn out lumber up to 12 feet wide and 6 feet high which he named "Fenton's Mill". It functioned until 1902 when it was destroyed by a fire. The mill site has been used for various purposes including fields now known as North Haverhill Cemetery and Westover Cemetery since then including an amusement park called Park View amusement park which opened in 1915 across from where Fenton's Mill once stood. In 1870, Reverend Ezra Stiles built his home "Stiles' Well" north of town on Long Road just west of what is now Manchester Street (now Route 128). Reverend Stiles served as pastor at First Congregational Church from 1871-1875 before moving to Burlington where he became Superintendent of Schools for that city before dying there in 1886. His wife Esther also lived near Easthammontown until her death in 1903 while their two children still attended school there underprivileged students sometimes playing truant because they could not afford transportation back home A locomotive belonging to Berkshire Mountain Railway #8014 hauled by its electric locomotive #14D ran into trouble eastbound between Winchester Junction (in modern Day Acton) and North Haverhill about five miles west of downtown on July 10 1889 while traveling along New England Central Railroad tracks owned by Berkshire Mountain Railway #8014 bound for Pittsfield Junction; both engines failed during derailment which caused widespread damage throughout much if not all widths thereof; some wires snapped causing more than 60% loss @ . Electric locomotive #14D had already pulled out some distance behind allowing mainline service back into Newton after repairs were made but due Firestone Locomotive Co.'s agreement with GWR this line remained closed until 1956 when it reopened as part-and-parcel#2I&J trackage between Newton/Winchester Junction & Pittsfield Junction) A new engine (#9191) replaced 14D after she retired following an accident at White Sands Summit Yard near Randolph MA on May 3 1924; however this engine did not stay long or operate everyday due to repairs necessary prior to switching over to electric operation - one reason why 14D has often been referred to erroneously as "the old 14" This particular train wreck remains one of only two occurrences where both locomotives involved have still been preserved & running today (& possibly third if 15U0M+ are included)

Easthampton is a town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located in the northwestern portion of the state. It was founded by Puritans in 1638, and became an incorporated town in 1853. As of the 2010 census, Easthampton had a population of 394 people. Easthampton is twinned with: In 1534, John White built a sawmill on the river at present-day West Springfield. The mill continued to be operated until 1729. In that year, one hundred men from Marblehead came to live and work at the mill. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1730; however, it continued to be used as an oven for baking bread until 1816 when it was replaced by a brick building known as "The Old School House". Easthampton's first jail was built in 1638 on Main Street between High and Low Streets. It served as both a prison and court house during its early years. The jail burned down in 1681 but was rebuilt soon afterward and reoccupied as a schoolhouse. In 1701, this structure burned down again but was rebuilt within two years using money received from patent sales made by John Hancock during his presidency (the first American president). The new schoolhouse remained operational until 1800 when it too caught fire. It also served as an engine house before being replaced by another brick building which still stands today on High Street near where Route 128 intersects Interstate 90 One of Easthampton's most famous residents occurred while she lived there only briefly: Margaret Fuller wrote her book "The Great Gatsby" here while living with her father after moving out of Boston due to financial difficulties there. Fuller returned to Boston after spending time living in Easthampton (she would later write "To Build A Fire") before moving permanently back to Long Island some time around 1885 or 1886 As early as 1639 Puritan settlers were settling what is now Easthampton Township according to local historian Melvin Laughlin Jr.: “At earliest incidents connected with our settlement we find mention only incidentally; but upon closer reflection we perceive that certain definite designations were given us whereby we might know each other better; these were Meetings Place (a name applied originally only to [the] meeting-house), Nightingales” . . . “We set about erecting our Meeting House about three weeks after our arrival from Watertown…It cost not much more than five shillings per week actually expended; yet because it stood alone, without any adjoining houses or roads or means of communication with each other, its behavior towards all who attended hath been much esteemed every day since its erection” ..... According “A History of New England” written by Lewis Hillard Moulton II (1892) : “The first meeting-house erected at Easthampton may be said generally to have been that called Mrdick’s Meeting House on Main Street north side [now]High St., which formed part of Lot No 1 together with some olden barns situated immediately northwest thereof….Accordingly Mrdick bore witness against us at Ipswich that he could go no further then Manchester…..After Mrdick left we began annually [to hold] meetings thereon….Before long several others joined him therein including Jonathan Vining who resided near Ipswich for many years before he removed farther into this township……..about tenanted lots having been allotted unto them they assembled themselves together usually twice yearly[ ]and created their own government directely under their own hands…The first meeting-house so erected belonged finally theretoometime prior to 1700″ . . An account dated Mar 3rd 1641 records: Having mett elders Andros & family thervpone nighte they ordered me home immediatly wee went eateinge I Left alot thervpone and got nothing wee gaited agayne next day wee ffinally went out about 10 oclock pm acheived nothing Wee gaited tomorrow morning about 5 am got word my Father did come home late last night so I concluded he boded ill etcetera But this event never happened because afterwards Weetherein took place another warr betwixt vsall parties arising outof said Agreement” … By 1700 twelve different churches had been erected throughout town viz:Methodist church #1 on High street Trinity church #2 on Centre street Baptist church #3 on South street Presbyterian church #4 along Park avenue Congregational church #5 along Quincy road among others This list does not include those constructed after1700 when easyathamontown incorporation occurred A large number of Revolutionary War veterans settled here also prior TO America's independence including General Cornwallis who arrived July 12TH 1775 After commanding British forces invading Massachusetts He petitioned for citizenshipAugust 20TH 1776 On October 25TH 1777 Congress granted him Utopia status becoming -1st United States Colonel Commanding Forces Overseas Continental Army During Revolution At least one settler -John Eliot -maintained upholstery business here Prior To His Acquisition Of land Here One can still see portions Of His Business Establishment Inbuilding On Corner Of Huntington Avenue And Park Road
Easthampton is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield- Chicopee-Easton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Easthampton was settled by English colonists in 1636 as "Hastings". The name was changed to "Easterborough" in 1704 and then to "Eastshampton" in 1728. The town's first minister, Reverend John Eliot, baptized George Washington on April 6, 1786.
