Easthampton, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,492 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is home to the Easthampton Elementary School District and two high schools: Easthampton High School and Great Valley HS. The first settlers in what is now Easthampton were Native Americans who called the area Hingham meaning " sites on the water" because of its many small ponds. In 1764, Captain John Smith found saltpeter mines in what is now Easthampton and named it after his discovery. In 1768, Captain John Morse bought land around present-day Easthampton from the Narragansetts for £10 per acre. He founded a trading post here which became known as "Morse's Station." The town was officially incorporated on November 3rd, 1792. Many important events took place during early years of Easthampton's history including: In 1814 Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne moved his family from East Hampton to live in what is now Easthampton when he purchased 10 acres of land near present day Main Street and North Avenue for $60 per acre (what would later become Hawthorne Boulevard). Hawthorne soon became one of the most famous men in America due to his book "Hawkeye". He also founded an agricultural society here which helped promote agriculture throughout New England and even exported crops to Spain and other parts of Europe. Haworthone died suddenly while away on a business trip in 1847 at age 50 and was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery with full military honors beside Randolph Churchill (1st Viscount Halifax). His widow lived until her death in 1903; she bequeathed much of her estate to established scholarships for women students at Dartmouth College.. In 1881 Samuel Morse donated land between First Street and North Avenue for use as a school district which would eventually become easTHAMPSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT. Today's easTHAMPSON HIGH SCHOOL opened its doors on October 15 th , 1896 . Mrs. Lillian Hellman served as superintendent from 1951 until her retirement in 1969 . Mr Eileen Casey assumed Superintendent position January 1 st , 1991 . Assistant Superintendent Dr Beverly Silliman has been with us since our opening night! Easthampton is named after George Washington's birthplace and 2nd wife Martha Custis Lee. The first Europeans to visit what is now Easthampton were the Mayflower Compact Party in 1620. The town was platted in 1768 by its namesake General John Eastham who had fought during the American Revolution and received an honorable discharge from service in that war. In 1815, Easthampton voted to become a state capital under the new United States Constitution. The following year it became one of five towns within Middlesex County to ratify the State Constitution which granted voting rights to all residents on an equal basis with other municipalities statewide. In 1826, Easthampton voters approved a $10 per capita tax levy for school support which remains in effect today and has helped fund many local community improvements including new libraries and parks as well as street repairs and paving throughout the years
