Easthampton is a town in Massachusetts, United States. It is located on the east side of the Connecticut River. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is one of eight towns in Norfolk County and part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Easthampton were farmers who came from England in 1638. They named their land "Eashampton" after a place they had heard about on their travels. In 1764, John Adams moved to Easthampton from Framingham and became one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The town was incorporated as a village in 1820 and then as a town in 1834. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Easthampton residents fought for General Robert E Lee against General George McClellan's Union army. The Battle of Saratoga took place near Easthampton on September 17, 1865; it was one of three major engagements fought by Confederate forces that day across New England states (the others being at White Sands Beach and Newton). While most easthamptonians supported Confederate forces, some did assist McClellan's Union army in order to protect their homes and families. After reuniting with his family, George McClellan decided to retreat back into Virginia after losing Saratoga; however, he kept his unit alive by retreating through eastern Massachusetts under fire from Confederate troops close to his home town of Alexandria (now Arlington Heights). Aftermath of that battle saw many civilian deaths due to heavy artillery fire which continued until late November 1865 when Union forces finally withdrew from Virginia proper without any losses- an event which has been called "the last great battle for American independence". As an all-volunteer regiment under command of Brigadier General James Longstreet led by Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison marched into northern Virginia en route back home towards Richmond following Gettysburg where over 50% casualties were suffered by both armies it can be said that there was little impact or tangible victory for either side other than numbers killed or wounded rather then actual territory taken or lost - however this did not stop numerous northerners including members prominent within both rebelcommanders eager to return home before winter set in and start strategizing on how best move Forward should things have proceeded had there been no fighting taking place... regardless easy access roads existed making movement much more difficult so much so that entire state could easily be controlled through marching columns directly up river.. such events seem very microcosm macrocosm depicting larger truths concerning human nature
