The first permanent settler in Easthampton was Nicholas Putnam who arrived on the "Nathan's Vine" in 1638 and named it after his kinsman and friend Nicholas Vail (1575-1636), an English gentleman who had served as ambassador to Holland and France. George Whitefield came to Easthampton in 1734 from Barbados with his family, settling along the river where he would later build his sawmill. The village of Easthampton developed around these two commercial enterprises until 1824 when they merged into one borough under the name of Easthampton. In 1827, a school house was built on Meetinghouse Road which became operational that year under the leadership of Mrs. Sarah Peake Eliot (died 1886). In 1828, a cemetery was established on Meetinghouse Road with burial starting that year for local residents and farmers as well as local Revolutionary War veterans. On July 24, 1830, Representative John Adams voted against a resolution authorizing President Andrew Jackson to suspend habeas corpus for all prisoners in America due to popular opinion at home about what he perceived as excessive use of military power by American authorities during the Mexican–American War; this vote demonstrated Adams' strong opposition to martial law during any time of war or emergency. This event helped lead to Adams' impeachment proceedings eleven years later in 1848 following his role in supporting president James K. Easthampton is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Easthampton was first settled in 1630 by Puritans from England. It was incorporated as a town on April 5, 1793. From 1819 to 1825, Easthampton was an agricultural center of great importance due to its many mills and factories that produced goods for the eastern market. In 1926, Easthampton became one of sixteen towns within the new Townsite Administration System of Massachusetts; this system collapsed in 1999 but remains in effect today as a governing body for eleven towns within Hampshire County. The origins of Easthampton can be traced back to 1630 when English Puritans arrived in what is now Hampshire County and founded a small settlement called Meadow Hall on present-day Easthamton Pond (now known as Aqueduct Brook). This community soon grew into a large town with over 100 residents and two churches – one Congregational and one Baptist – which functioned together until 1793 when it became an independent township under the jurisdiction of Worcester County. In 1819, after much discussion among representatives from various neighboring towns about whether or not they should become part of Easthampton, it finally voted to do so and changed its name to "Easthampton." The millinery industry continued to play an important role in early days of Easthanumpton although other types of manufacturing also developed during this time such as soap production and textiles. In 1926, when twelve other rural communities within New England joined forces to form the Townsite Administration System under Governor John Fenton (the precursor to state government), Easthanumpton chose not to join because it felt that its independence would be limited by those larger communities while still being able to enjoy all the benefits that came with incorporation into a bigger organization like Townsite administration system. Aqueduct Brook quickly became renowned for being able to provide clean water available 24/7 without any need for locates another pump or hose outside which created environmental problems later on including major flooding events which caused significant damage both inside and outside of townspeople' homes during extreme weather conditions such as floods during wintertime or hurricanes[1]. As mentioned earlier, several industrial plants were built throughout history here including Wigglesworth & Sons Cotton Mill (1881), E&J Bradley Paper Works (1924), IBM World Headquarters Factory No 2 (1965-1970) along with many more small businesses over time if we include defunct ones such as Hortson's Furniture Store[2], [3] etc., making up what has been known locally as "EASTHAMTON INDUSTRIES" which spans back over 350 years! With all these businesses active there must have been something pretty good going on economically until around 1990s when things went downhill rapidly starting with high school students leaving town limits for better opportunities elsewhere[4], followed by retirements/deaths among older generations leading directly then into economic decline([5]). Anyway though since then things have slowly come back online with some initiatives taken by local officials like increasing tourism budget [7] but overall it seems like things will never really improve given our current political climate where legislatures seem ideologically opposed towards change no matter how well intentioned some may be!
