Easthampton, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,674 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is bordered to the north by Quincy, to the east by Somerville, to the south by Amherst and Randolph counties, and to the west by Newton. The town's name comes from an early Indian village called Hettonaonka or Ehtonaonka on Wellesley River. The first settlers in Easthampton were some of those who founded Boston in 1630. They named their new village after John Wheelock of Scotland—the first Englishman ever to set foot in what is now Massachusetts—and his family had come overland from Edinburgh about that time. Wheelock had married one of these early colonists, Mary Trott (sometimes spelled Truett). The family soon moved from Wellesley River into present-day Easthampton when they acquired land along it from native Abenaki people. In 1646 some more English settlers arrived in what later became Easthampton; they were led by Captain John Smith and included many among its original founding families. Easthampton grew rapidly during its early years as a small town; services such as schools and churches were built quickly with little money except for what was saved up during the winter months when goods could not be taken downriver because of ice cover. By 1792 there were only 7 residents living in what would become Easthampton proper; most of the growth came during its years as a village which culminated with its incorporation as a town on December 1, 1853. At this time there were over 100 citizens living within easy walking distance of all three central square blocks downtown: North Main Street (now Market Street), South Main Street (now State Route 11), and East Main Street (now Washington Avenue). During World War II much effort was put into building roads which connected nearby farms with local munitions factories for wartime production; therefore it is difficult today to see any evidence whatsoever of prior industry hereabouts. However much has changed since then both medically and physically due largely to advances made since then in technology which has made life easier for everyone involved - enabling us all easily access medical treatment without having either far away hospitals or lengthy travel times!
