Easthampton, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,681 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Worcester Metropolitan Statistical Area. Easthampton has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and it was first settled by English colonists in 1630. Easthampton was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1853. It became an incorporated city on July 1, 1898. The area now comprising Easthampton was originally part of the towns of North Reading and South Reading. On December 5, 1775, General John Adams led a force of American Revolutionary War veterans from North Reading to South Reading in order to assist local militiamen fighting against British forces in what is known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. Afterward, Adams decided that Easthampton should be included within Worcester Township because its location made it easy for civilians to get supplies and reinforcements to the war effort. The first post office opened in Easthcotton on October 15, 1824; however, due to lack of population growth or infrastructure development during this time period, only two other buildings were built until 1860 when three more were erected including the current municipal building which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1630 which also served as a courthouse and jail from 1787-1790 before being destroyed by fire in 1810 On January 1st 1800 James Atherton married Mary Bowne and moved with his new wife into what is now known as "the old white house" east of Main Street where he had previously established himself as a tanner prior to their arrival in Boston . James Atherton died on November 15nd 1800 at the age of 78 years after making unsuccessful attempts over many years unsuccessfully attempting ratification with both Massachusetts and Rhode Island governments
