Easthampton is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Easthampton is one of the most developed small towns in New England and has many high-tech businesses and industries. There are also several smaller villages located within the town boundaries. Easthampton has a strong sense of community spirit and its citizens have been known to help each other out when needed and to contribute to their local communities. The town's namesake, General John Howe, fought in the American Revolution and died in battle at Saratoga Springs in 1777. The first permanent settler in Easthampton was John Allyn who arrived about 1650s from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England. He built a house on what is now Main Street and named it Haverhill after his home village of Haverhill Court which he had removed from Salem Parish to move into his own land hereabouts six years earlier. In May 1661Allyn married Mary Browne at Ipswich Congregational Meetinghouse with whom he had two children – Samuel (born c1662) and Elizabeth (born c1665). Some sources claim that Allyn may have come over as part of the Pilgrims who were landing at Plymouth Rock on November 3rd 1588 pursuant to an indenture between Governor Bradford et al., but this theory cannot be confirmed by any evidence or documentary record extant today. After acquiring additional property hereabouts through purchase or donation shortly thereafter including much of present-day West Side Road (now North Main Street), John Allyn erected a large frame building thereon on July 9, 1675 which he called "Haverhill Hall". Of all early buildings in this vicinity only one remains standing - that now serves as an office building for the Town Common Council - with additions dating back to 1887 comprising a new wing incorporating portions of an earlier brick structure erected by Jonas Sargent for $4,. 10% discount off regular price due to occasion; just prior thereto Elisha Parsons had purchased and moved into said structure about four rods southward along Main Street opposite Yesteryear's Store across from which lot line original buildings stood then platted said property eastward thence northwesterly three rods continuing thence easterly one rod continuing thence northerly two rods forming today's current street frontage hereinabove described . At same time lots lying southerly extending along Bothwell road adjoining said square were exacted from persons then living therein thereby making Said square bounded on both sides by Lots Nos 1 thru 5 inclusive being contiguous with That Block lately mentioned containing Twenty Pewares widthwise therefore Township Boundaries having been exactly specified & laid down hereby: see accompanying plat thereof... Ipswich native Thomas Gassaway settled hereabout late 1700s while stationed aboard HMS Discovery during her First Fleet cruise around Cape Cod Bay.. George Washington spent time at Haverhill Hall while visiting Boston during his winter encampment near Marblehead MA on December 17/1817: ...In 1801 Drury sold lot No 2 back to Mr Gassaway for $175... By 1804 George Washington again stopped overnight at Haverhill Hall before returning home via Portsmouth NH... On October 25 1814 USS Constitution “Ceasar” under command of Commodore William Bainbridge anchored off Easthampton beach drying dune sands ashore after crossing icy bay waters en route from New York City bound for Halifax NS… During Action #27 September 1862 USS Constitution flagship hit rock bottom near Easthampton Beach causing shipwrecking killing all crewmembers save Commodore William Bainbridge himself…. In 1865 James Kapp learned about Elisha Parsons' attempt to establish corn farming operation west side road between main street & Yesteryear's store.. When Kapp bought right next door piece of property later renamed Kapp Road from Nathan Hale party seen map illustration below...
