In 1737, John Adams moved to Easthampton from Northbridge and bought land along Present-Day High Street, which he namedAdams Hill after himself and his wife Abigail Adams. Adams established a dairy business and served as one of the selectmen for many years. In 1772, during King George II's American Revolution, easthampton voted against independence and seceded from Massachusetts; however, it rejoined the Commonwealth two years later when its boundaries were adjusted to match those of Northbridge proper. In 1812, James Kapp founded Kapp & Company merchant shipping company with his brother Samuel Kapp on behalf of President James Kapp Sr., making easthampton one of the few communities in New England to receive mail service from Philadelphia (the first such service being provided by John Hancock).
