The first settlers in what is now Easthampton were small farmers and their families who arrived from Great Britain in the early 17th century. In 1638, John Winthrop built the first permanent home in what is now Easthampton when he came to live with his brother and father-in-law on land granted by King Charles I of England. By 1851, there were over 1,000 residents in Easthampton. In 1837, two years after General Quincy Adams' aborted effort to annex much of New England to form a single state called "New York and Massachusetts Bay," a group of businessmen led by Isaiah Morse purchased 813 acres (291 ha) of land south of present-day Easthampton for $1 an acre. They named the tract "EasTHAMpton" after one of their friends, Benjamin Harrison Beecher (1767–1835). The town's first school was opened in 1839; it was quickly replaced by a grange hall which served as poorhouse and depot until 1862 when a store moved into the current building on Main Street. There was also anvil factory until 1865 when it closed due to competition from other businesses within town limits. A canal system linking Boston with New York City was proposed but never completed because of financial problems caused by American Civil War hostilities between Union and Confederate forces during that time period. In 1861, following America's secession from Britain's Union under Lincoln's presidency, Easthampton became known as "the bellwether town" because many RepublicansVote heretofore had been sent to Lexington or Worcester where they would afterwards serve in Congress or governor’s office once they got back home (eclipsing any Democratic votes). On April 19 1861 local newspapers reported that Abraham Lincoln had been sworn into office as President of the United States at Ford’s Theatre without having ever left Washington D.C., setting off celebrations throughout Massachusetts which continued well into 1862 despite efforts by prominent citizens including Reverend James Pierpont Coffin (a recent convert to Mormonism) not only to distance themselves politically but also financially from such events since no federal funds could be expected for several months while he awaited official confirmation from Washington DS To this day some descendants still celebrate Easter eggs laid at Ford’s Theatre even though most everyone knows that George Washington actually attended – he did so twice! During World War II Easthampton produced more than 100%of all paper used in North America military production including aircraft cockpits and bomb tubes
