Chicopee is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. Chicopee was first settled by Europeans in 1638 as part of the Pequot colony. It became a town on April 15, 1855, when it was annexed by Boston. Chicopee is located in the eastern edge of Middlesex County and borders Springfield to the north and Somerville to the south. The town's name means "place where people go to chop wood." The area where Chicopee now stands was originally forested and covered with ice for several hundred years before humans began moving into what is now Chicopee. In 1638, English colonists John Eliot and Abigail Adams traveled through this area and decided that it would make a good place to live because there were no natural enemies here so they could focus on agriculture rather than defense against Native Americans who had been living near them for centuries. In 1763, when Boston granted its first township status to individuals within its boundaries, it included parts of ChicopEE including present-day Springfield and Somerville. At that time there were only about 350 residents in all of Middlesex County; however, due to growing trade with other colonies as well as population growth throughout New England over the next two centuries+, almost everyone in ChicopEE eventually moved away from their original homes or changed their residence often over time. In 1855, following annexation by Boston of part of Milton (now Quincy), many residents in ChicopEE voted not to become a part ofBoston proper but instead form one new town named after themselves called Chichester which later merged with Newton (now Westwood) also annexed by Boston. With barely enough room left within Chichester for both towns’ populations (the combined population then reached 11,000), both towns formed an independent government known as “The Townshends” until finally merging into Boston on April 15th1885 under charter number 5393 issued by Governor Andrew Johnson Jr.. As part of this merger process some land within present day Springfield was exchanged for land east of Interstate 95 which lay within Chichester borders at that time; however much remains today unincorporated villageland beyond those boundaries still lying undeveloped despite efforts by various community groups over the past few decades+. ChicopEE has experienced significant growth since 1985; most notably during the late 1990s/early 2000s when high-density housing development took off adjacent to I-95 which created an influx of new people and businesses into what had remained largely rural surroundings until then; this has led to increased job opportunities and economic stability for downtown ChicOPEE while concurrently repairing or rehabilitating older buildings adjoining I-95 which have seen recent use as homeless shelters etc.. Despite these positive developments though there are still areas where progress has been slow or halted such as regards education & health care although various initiatives are underway such as building a new library & clinic respectively.; overall though things seem headed in the right direction so long as city officials continue pressing forward with proactive planning + implementation

In 1764, Chicopee was renamed for Prince George, Duke of Kent, who had become King George III of England after his father's death. The town grew rapidly in the 18th century due to its natural resources and its status as a hub for trade with northwestern Europe. In 1795, Chicopee became part of the United States through Confederation. In 1800, it developed into an agricultural center with large dairy farms and corn mills. During World War II, Chicopee served as a military base for American troops fighting in North Africa and Europe. After the war ended, it experienced rapid growth as a manufacturing center due to rising consumer demand for products manufactured in America. In recent years, Chicopee has seen significant gentrification efforts spearheaded by developers interested in turning the town into a high-end residential community.
