In 1941 Chicopee Village began construction on what would become its central business district—an approximately square block bounded by Lowell Street on the north, Quincy Street on the east, Arlington Boulevard on the south, and Commonwealth Avenue on the west—a largely unfortified commercial area surrounded by high walls or earthen berms separating it from surrounding residential areas. This area remains much as it appeared when plans were made to build it: an open-air rectangular plaza anchored by two large buildings housing bank branches and other commercial enterprises with views over downtown Boston; additional smaller businesses are located around two major streets which meet at Quincy Street: State Road 7 (now Boylston Street) ran through center of village while Arlington Boulevard served as its eastern border until 1965 when that road was redesignated Route 116 (present day Interstate highway 95). Incorporation into city government led to increased development activity within this boundaries with authorities building new public services including parks & playgrounds as well as libraries & schools within walking distance for residents; although many small businesses closed during economic downturns following 9/11 attacks most have since reopened thanks to current redevelopment efforts By 2040 more than 60% of all jobs will be generated within 1 mile radius
