The first permanent settler in Chicopee was Nicholas Coyte in 1764. In 1907, when Falls Road became a state highway it passed through downtown ChicopEE along Falls Road which led travelers to what is now known as State Street just east of Watertown Avenue. In 1912, when Falls Road was redesignated as Interstate 91 it changed its name to Route 128 and soon after merged with US 1 near modern-day Quincy center whereupon it continued on parallel with US 1 until its truncation at Wareham Center Boulevard near Southwick Boulevard in 2002; thereafter it followed Southwick Boulevard southward before intersecting I-91 northbound just past Wareham Center Boulevard before terminating at exit 7A (WBGL) near present day Warrior Point Road which leads out into Ipswich Township). As more people moved into central MA during the Great Depression there were increased tensions among black residents who had worked alongside white farmers since colonial times but nonetheless felt like they were being left behind politically or economically by their wealthier white neighbors; this culminated with violence on Halloween night 1929 when white supremacists group White Star Legion terrorized black citizens living within miles of Fall River while dressed up as negroes attending a masked ball at hotel called "The Cotton Club".
