It has also become a popular tourist destination due to its historical sites and beautiful architecture.
Chicopee was founded in 1764 by the Ledyard family. The first post office in Chicopee was established in 1816. In 1841, Chicopee became a town and was renamed for General George Washington. In 1898, Chicopee became an incorporated city.
