On November 15, 1638, Nathaniel Eaton came overland from Ipswich and established himself at what is now Main Street corner with College Street. Eaton moved his family into a log cabin he had built along Elm St., which still stands today as part of Northampton Academy School District No.. 2A school buildings complex on Old Northampton Road (now University Avenue). In 1728, newly appointed Deputy Governor Thomas Hutchinson ordered all male British citizens between 25 and 44 years old living within Massachusetts to come down to Boston for identity verification before their citizenship could be taken final measure. All men who failed this test were entitled to receive land grants or vote representation in Parliament until after King George III revoked these rights in 1774. On January 1st, 1729/30 only indentured servants were counted for purposes of taxation so it appears that there may have been no such mass migration as reported by Hutchinson; however this does not mean that there wasn't any early settlement activity taking place here! Today’s downtown business district began developing shortly thereafter when small stores started opening up along Washington Street near College Avenue – just north of present day Union Station – starting around 1814 when large new warehouses were being constructed nearby thanks largelyto local farmers becoming interestedin dry goods storage duefiguring enhanced trade opportunities would result given increased competition from stateside merchants exporting manufactured goods onto eastern markets! continued growth followed following major firestorms ravaging northeastern MA during Panic Of 1847 which devastated much downtownBoston; businesses quickly rebuilt using innovative techniques pioneered then & continue utilized TODAY including face brick building techniques!
