Witney's family owned much of what now makes up Chicopee. The first post office in ChicopEE opened in 1768; however, it closed in 1858 because there were no mail routes between Boston and New York City at that time. As a result, letters sent to ChicopEE usually arrived back home before they reached their destination! In 1830s residents built smallpox hospitals near their homes as an attempt to prevent the Town from becoming infected bythe disease during times when sickness ran rampant among frontier farmers living close to Indian settlements
