Chicopee, Massachusetts is a small town in central Massachusetts. It was first settled by the Puritans in 1630. The area now known as Chicopee was included in the town of Northampton until 1847. Chicopee's population peaked at 20,000 in 1920, but fell to 10,000 by 1960. The population has since increased to 15,000. Chicopee's history can be traced back to 1630 when settlers arrived from England on Cape Cod Bay. In that year, a group of men and women set out from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England on foot and built a cabin that they named "Chequers." They were joined by others who came later that year. By 1753, there were fifteen families living in "Chequers." By 1775, there were twenty-one families living in "Chequers." In 1847, the town of Northampton was merged into Chicopee with its sister community of Upton. At this time, "Chequers" consisted of just six homes; three for men and three for women. The first post office opened in "Chequers" on November 1st, 1848. The population of Uttar Pradesh increased rapidly due to invitation from British authorities during the Indian Rebellion (1857). Asians began arriving throughout what is now eastern Massachusetts during this time period; many seeking work available only in Boston or Worcester because those regions had more jobs open than any other parts of Massachusetts at that time (Lench 1993: 223). Consequently, “ Chequers” became home to an increasing number people who did not have any close family or friends within their own community (Lench 1993: 223) . As businesses grew larger and new streets were laid out through downtown Chicopia during this time period things started moving more quickly for some residents than for others (Norman 1985: 134). For example: late 1800s immigrants purchasing farm land would often subdivide it into small lots which they then rented out while their crops grew; these individuals would sell additional acres after their original purchase so they could continue farming even if prices went up or down based on market fluctuations (Fowler 1978: 9-10). However due to changes brought about by World War I such as advances technology making it possible for soldiers and sailors stationed overseas to bring food back with them; grocery stores appeared all over America soon followed by similar stores being opened up throughout Pumpkin Hollow whereupon people stopped renting Out property altogether (Fowler 1978: 11-12). Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Chicopee were two brothers, Jonathan and Nicholas Smith, who arrived in 1735 from Connecticut. Chicopee was platted in 1738 by John Chauncy and named for Mount Auburn Abbey in England. In 1801 the town had a population of 1,500 and it grew rapidly until the Panic of 1837 caused a decline in business activity which led to its abandonment; only 6 people lived there by 1830. The last resident left for good on July 10th, 1846. The abandoned townsite has been used as an open-air landfill since then
