This period also saw one of the earliest successful attempts at self-publishing for gun magazines when publisher Elijah Howe self-published his monthly journal "The Rifleman" in 1869 under the name Eagle Publishing Company Ltd.. In early 19th century Chicopee had a cloth-making industry which produced high quality fabric for use both inside and outside homes throughout New England and beyond. In 1860 John Fenton founded a printing press in downtown Chicopee which continues to be published today as The Fenton Press Incorporated with over 100 employees print more than 25 newspapers including "The Beacon", "The Journal Star" and "The Herald". In 1907 local farmers formed a cooperative to raise corn on their own land so they could provide fresh food for markets during winter months; this led to growth of grocery stores, trucking services and other businesses around the corner from the old flour mill across Route 9A from downtown ChicopEE Today most residents work within Springfield or Greater Boston due to its highly educated workforce as well as easy access to transportation options through commuter rail systems like Amherst College/Springfield Union Station or Harvard University/Boston Common station close by.
