Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,421 at the 2010 census. Chicopee was founded in 1764 by the Reverend Samuel Adams and his wife Abigail Adams as a small farming community on the banks of the Charles River. It was named for the French village of Chicoutimi on the opposite bank of the river. The first settler in Chicopee was Samuel Adams who arrived in 1764 from England with his family. He erected a small cabin near today's corner of Main Street and High Street. In 1765, he married Abigail Adams and they started to farm aroundpresent-day Greenbush Road and Park Avenue. They were soon joined by their two children Samuel (1766–1828) and Lois (1768–1838). TheAdamses remained active in their community until their death in 1829 when they bequeathed their estate to young educator Elijah Parish Childs (1800–1893). From then on, Chicopee underwent several name changes: Peconic (1835), West Springfield (1840), Southborough (1845), Northborough (1901), Eastboro (1912), Southborough again (1976). Chicopee officially became its current name on November 15, 1916 when it amalgamated with neighboring Eastboro to form what is now Worcester County. The Webster brothers – John W., Daniel W., George Washington Webster – played an important role in this merger which occurred just weeks after John Fennimore Cooper’s death at age 80 from pneumonia at home in Worcester County. At that time Chicopee had a population of only 350 residents but quickly grew into one of Greater Worcester’s largest towns thanks to its booming commercial center which included four cotton mills along with twenty-six retail stores and dozens of businesses providing both manufacturing services and services related to agriculture including fourteen farms producing corn, beans, potatoes, eggs, milk and flour; six woolen mills; ten leather factories; five cigar factories; three breweries; three paper companies; one glass company; one insurance company; one banking firm such as Trustees National Bank & Trust Company where JFWC handled all business transactions between the localities without need for intermediaries like bankers or check casters In addition to its burgeoning commercial activity there also emerged an expanding educational sector with eight schools offering grades K-8th serving students from George Washington Elementary School through Chiswick Academy Preparatory School/High school located adjacent to Chiswick Mall across First Avenue from today's Post Office building housing many other businesses including Macy's Department Store - once home to Sears - becoming known as "The mall" It should be noted that while much has changed over time throughout Chicopee’s history - most notably its demographics having rapidly grown disproportionately African American during this period - much remains ominously similar including its deeply rooted sense of community identity which has never dissipated despite fluctuations over time caused primarily by economic factors such as joblessness or sluggish economy growth affecting areas further south within Greater Worcester .
Chicopee was founded in 1630 by the Reverend John Eliot. The town today is located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Chicopee served as a military outpost on the border of New England and Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. In 1814, it became an incorporated city.
