The Chicopee Gun Hammer Company was founded in 1887 by three men, Hiram A. Cook, Perry D. Smith and John C. Weisfeld. The company made hammers for handguns and shotguns, as well as rifle revolvers and pistols. In 1928 the Chicopee Gun Hammer Company merged with the Sheehan Manufacturing Company to form the Sheehan-Chicopee Machine & Tool Corporation.
Chicopee is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,674 at the 2010 census. Chicopee is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Chicopee were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his group of 15 men on May 5, 1524. They paddled up the Neponset River from Lynnhaven to Chicopee Bay, then walked eastward for about three miles before finding an anchorage between two islands. In 1636, Captain John Smith anchored in Chicopee Bay for supplies and intercourse with Native Americans during his exploration of what would become New England. A few years later a smallpox epidemic took hold in Massachusetts and killed many people in the town of Ipswich; however, Smith's sailors managed to outrun the disease and return safely to their ship without fear of it spreading among them. Captain John Winthrop founded Dedham Village in 1701 as a farming community outside of Boston after returning from his mysteriousvoyage through the Northeast Passage that had been reported by others including Captains Robert Dudleyall and James Cook. In 1716 Winthrop built a small church here near where he lived until he moved westward into Burlington (now Quincy) Parish in 1735. This village soon outgrew Dedham Village and began building its own homes on more than one site since there was not enough land available for all of them inside or outside the city limits of Boston proper which surrounded Dedham Village like an ever-shrinking ring around a large firewood. The first buildings were erected on what is now Elm Street just west of present day Commonwealth Avenue just south of Roxbury Road northeast corner First Ward line; this settlement became known as "Winthrop Square" after him Some early residents include: Revs Caleb Cheever (1705-1790), Nathaniel Geddes (1709-1768), Increase Marston (1684-1743), David Hartman (1807-1875). After several years when some inhabitants preferred living closer to downtownBoston they petitioned King George III to have their square relocated nearer Parliament Hill so they could be within walking distance but their request was denied because Parliament Hill lay within city limits at that time while "Winthrop Square" lay within town limits

However, this event helped establishing Springfield as an important center for commerce and industry.
Chicopee was settled in 1636 by Puritans and was named for the English town of Ipswich. The first permanent settler arrived in 1638, named John Winthrop. Chicopee became a part of Massachusetts in 1781. In 1834, Chicopee had the first electric lights in Massachusetts.
