Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in central Massachusetts. The population was 24,853 at the 2010 census. Chicopee lies on the border of Hampden and Columbia Counties. The town is named after Captain John Winthrop and his family who settled there in 1631. In 1714, when Boston was founded, Chicopee became part of that city. The first settler in what is now Chicopee was Amos Kendall who came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1734. In 1812-1813 an outbreak of yellow fever led to the deaths of many people in Springfield and Chicopee due to lack of immunity against the disease. However, since no one had any knowledge about how to prevent or treat it, this event helped spur development for medical care in the area. The first post office was opened in 1824 by Colonel George Perkins with the name "New Bedford". A second post office called "Chicopee" was opened on July 1, 1830 by order of President James Kentshire under the direction of Lieutenant Governor Oliver Hazard Perry. On October 15, 1836 both offices were combined into one with the current name "Chicopee". This period saw a great deal of growth as new businesses proliferated around downtown Chicopee including lumberyards and breweries which continue to operate today; examples include Brown's Brewery (brewed beer) and Two Bridges Brewing Company (Hefeweizen). During World War II much activity took place within the boundaries of present day ChicopEE due to war production plants located there such as USS Quincy Plant which produced munitions for America’s allies; later this plant morphed into UST Corporation which manufactured naval vessels until its closure in 2006. In recent years however most commercial activity has shifted away from downtown towards farmland adjacent to Interstate 84 just east of townline/CH 2177 north/south line . This trend appears set to continue with plans for a new shopping center being developed west off I-84 near Route 128 just south of Route 138 junction . Today, downtown ChicOPEE retains some notable historical buildings such as The Old State House (now used as a museum), Deaconess Chapel (built 1799), Patriot Hall (built 1820), Court House Annex (added 1929), First Congregational Church (dedicated 1907), Masonic Lodge #2 Building erected 1836 but replaced by current building 1953 and Butler Manufacturing Company Warehouse also built 1938 but torn down in 2009). Other significant buildings still standing include two churches - First Congregational Church Built 1800 & Second Congregational Church Built 1917 - these remain popular tourist destinations despite being threatened with demolition by developers over concerns about traffic congestion caused by continued expansion onto small lots adjacent to I-84
