Chicopee is located on the north side of Massachusettes River and about south of Boston. It was first settled in 1642 by Puritans from England. Chicopee has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa), typical of eastern Massachusetts. The town's rich history began with its founding as a small Rhode Island Plantation village named after the Indian name for Chicopee Falls, which forms part of the border between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In 1786, during the American Revolution, General George Washington appointed Major Richard Gridley as commander of British forces in New England to march against Patriot forces under Colonel John Burgoyne and Baroness Anne Hutchinson; Gridley's force reached Chicopee on September 12th before retreating back up the river to Ipswich two days later. In 1815-16, when Worcester County was created out of Middlesex County, Chicopee became one of its first townships. On April 15th 1870 it merged with Reading Township to form Readington Township; on November 6th 1888 it again merged with Worcester Township to form what is now Middlesex County. The population continued grow until 1970 when there were only 21 residents left inReadington Township and 20 residents in Chicopee township combined (the population had been swollen by recent annexations from neighboring townships). In 1975-76 an aggressive campaign led by then-Mayor Joseph Ahern resulted in voter approval for incorporation as a city; this occurred despite opposition from both the Chicopee Historical Society and Mayor Ahern himself who claimed that incorporation would pave way for high taxes and less service regulation than existing municipalities allowed—a prediction made bear fruit over time as city services grew bloated while spending increased while tax revenues remained static or even declined (). After more than twenty years as a municipally incorporated city – spanning five mayors – ChicopEE voters passed an ordinance revoking incorporation status on November 3rd 2009 afterfailed attempts at referendum three years earlier had failed due to lackOf support from most elected officials within City Hall itself (). As such, chicopolese citizens will continue living their lives within their municipal borders for another fifteen years should they choose to do so (though some have already moved out into other nearby townships).
