The Town of Chelsea was formed on December 12, 1692 from parts of Lynn and Quincy. The first settler in Chelsea came by ship from England in 1693 and landed at Ipswich beach. They named their new town after themselves – Chelsea (pronouncedCHA-lay). In 1716, the town voted to annex what is now Watertown. This annexation led to a name change for Chelsea to Watertown Heights in 1737 because of its proximity to Boston Common and New York City streets. In 1802, Stamford Hill became part of Chelsea; it was annexed by the town in 1903. In 1969, sections of Chelsea were annexed into Brookline as part of a larger plan to expand Brookline into alluvial land around Plainfield and Milton Keynes. This move increased the population of Chelsea from 25,565 at the time to 38,916 by 2020 according to US Census data.
