Chelsea is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,000 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Middlesex County and the second most populous town in Massachusetts after Boston. Chelsea is located on the eastern edge of the Greater Boston metropolitan area and it shares borders with Somerville to its south and Cambridge to its north. The first European settlers in what is now Chelsea were Quakers from Pennsylvania who came there in 1636 for religious reasons. They named their new settlement after their friend and ally, Queen Anne's brother-in-law, Sir Henry Clinton of New York City. The originalname for Chelsea was Westchester because it lay west of Castle Hill on Hudson River where some early Dutch families had settled earlier that year. In 1768, when Rhode Island became an independent state, Stamford became Rhode Island's capital city; however, Stamford retained its status as a town until 1835 when it became part of Middlesex County. In 1872, when Chelsea merged with Watertown (now Watertown), then known as Westborough Township to form what would become Middlesex County, one of the primary goals was to provide more central location for all the towns within its boundaries so that services could be provided better by centralized government instead of each individual townspeople being responsible for all aspects of local government development themselves. This idea would eventually prove successful as Middlesex County developed into one of America's most prolific landowning nations during the 19th century due in large part to farmland they acquired from various sources including Congregationalists and Baptists who shared their beliefs about stewardship over land. Chelsea, Massachusetts is a small town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Chelsea was founded in 1636 by Puritans as a farmstead on the site of what is now Harvard University. In 1825, it became an incorporated village and then a town in 1867. The current name comes from its original location on the riverbank at Chelsea Green: "Cheshire" because of the Chesapeake Bay to its east and "New England" because of its English ancestry and history. The first settlers were Puritans who arrived from Connecticut in 1636 to start a new life in what is now Middlesex County. They named their land Chelsea after their hometown of Cheshire, England. The first house was built there in 1638 and soon afterward other settlements began to be built around Chelsea Green: Chenango (1639), Waltham (1641), Newton (1643), South Hadley (1646), Brockton (1651). By 1700, Stamford had also been established and soon afterwards more villages sprang up throughout Middlesex County including West Roxbury (1702), Easton (1705), Norwood(1710) and Brookline(1711). In 1825, when Chelsea became an incorporated village it boasted 1,600 residents; by 1830 it had reached 3,000 with over 100 businesses listed among its list ofselectors for election to town government. On July 6th 1830 large numbers assembled for a meeting at which lots were offered for sale within the limits of which they lay; many citizens preferred to remain as villagers rather than take possession of property that would have brought them into competition with others within the new community. This refusal may have been due to feeling that incorporation would not have given them all that much power or control over their lives as townspeople while also giving outsiders an idea about how things might work before they actually got involved. After some discussion it was decided that four members out of seven should be chosen by ballot cast direct from each household to serve on two-year terms “for ever thereafter” until such time as another election could be held “to choose one member out of every five who shall continue faithful” according to certain Provisions made prior thereto….thus starting what has become known as Town Meeting democracy which still prevails today
