Chelsea, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlers in Chelsea were Congregationalists from New Hampshire. In 1781, they founded what would become Chelsea as a small village on the eastern border of what is now Maidenhead and Windsor townships in Berkshire County. By 1800, Chelsea had a population of 350 residents and by 1821 it had grown to 1,500 residents. The Village Green was donated by Judge Ezra Stiles to the community for use as public ground and grazing for livestock. On July 4th, 1826, Stamford's Queen Charlotte Church held its first service inChelsea with Reverend James Higginson officiating. In 1830-31 Captain John Prentice took possession of land that lay east of Main Street between Amherst Road (now Park Avenue) and Elmwood Avenue (now Route 8). This piece of property became known as "Prentice's Neck". In 1840 Prentice sold his interest in Chelsea to George Ayer who moved into the house on Main Street which still stands today (Ayer House #2). Ayer ran an opium business out of this house from 1845 until his death in 1865. After Ayer's death his widow continued running her business out of the house until 1898 when it burned down during a gas leak at Stamford Power Plant; however her story may be apocryphal since no evidence exists to support this claim During World War II many stores were closed due to rationing but most businesses reopened after the war because there was no need for any goods produced in those days other than food supplies In 1951-52 Mayor Edward Jakes ordered all schools closed so that Manchester School could be enlarged; however some students decided not to go home early and started a school strike that lasted into Wednesday morning February 12th 1952 Howell High School also experienced a school strike on February 12th 1952: these strikers are usually referred to as "the classes from Howell" or simply "the classes from Howell"

Adams began to build a house on the property and named it after himself, Chelsea. The first store in Chelsea opened its doors in 1774 and soon became one of the most important businesses in the town. In 1802,Adams donated land toChelsea for a public square which has since been known as State Street. In 1814, an ordinance was passed establishing regulations for militia being raised withinChelsea limits. This ordinance helped make Chelsea a thriving community that played an important role during the War of 1812. After the war, many people left Chelsea for new opportunities and new homes were built throughout much of Boston and other cities. However, some residents decided to stay and continue their business operations in their old home. In 1870,Chelsea voted to annex itself into Boston due to its growing population and businesses did not want their location changing so they appealed this decision. On July 1st,1871,Chelsea joined Boston as a city Limits
