Chelsea is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. Prior to the American Revolution, Chelsea was part of Pondicherry Neck. In 1775, Chelsea was organized as a town by vote of its residents and became one of the original thirteen towns in Massachusetts. It achieved municipal status on July 1, 1833. The town sits atop a hill that separates it from neighboring Woburn and Framingham to the north and east; Waltham to the south and west; and Maynard to the northwest. The nearest larger city is Boston proper to the southeast. In 1630 John Winthrop founded what is now Chelsea with land he had purchased from Pequot Indians near present-day Quincy. Winthrop's success as an investor led him to sell his holdings in Chelsea in 1635 for £4000 sterling (which at that time was about $200,000). This infusion of new blood helped make Chelsea one of the most important towns in New England during its early years. During King Philip's War (1621-1625), Stamford Bridge -- then called "the Fairest Bridge on Earth" because it allowed passage between England and France -- played an important role in English military operations against Spanish forces besieging Boston Harbour. When English forces besieged Casa de la Calle – which overlooks present-day downtown Chelsea – they needed only cross over for support from shore batteries located on East London Heights across First Brook Street to take down besieging Spanish troops without having to go through Stamford Bridge.* Additionally, bridge construction may have been responsible for sparing nearby small villages such as Mannington from destruction during this period due to lack of other means of transportation*. So much so that when King Philip finally laid siege Shippingport (present day Dedham) on April 10th 1625 after making similar demands upon Boston Harbor port authorities* (* See footnote 2 ), few if any houses were destroyed or taken by storm within minutes due solely to rebel militia attacking shipping resources rather than enemy attacks * (* For more information see: "King Philip's War - A timeline" by Jodi Kantor). Because rainfall made travel difficult or impossible inside Manila Bay not only did these events spare many innocent lives but also shortened hostilities by weeks allowing ships unloading their cargo before sailing back out into open water *(*For more information see: "Boston Siege Diary - April 10th 1625" ). After Cromwell took power in England following Oliver Cromwell's army’s victory at Worcester leading up to Royalist rising there seemed little likelihood either side would allow another protracted siege given French assistance could be expected However war continued until September 6th when all hope seemed lost however late night fishing netting caught 3 Spaniards who surrendering said “we cannot help our People being starved here we have no Armour nor Ammunition neither can we fight any battles” . With this victory Britain regained control over Havana releasing all prisoners including 300 men under General Don Luis Menéndez de Mendaña who fought opposite English army at Worcester*) (*See footnote 1 ). Aftermath: One hundred Protestant refugees landed at Gloucester Point where they built a chapel; 100 men were pardoned** [*For more information see: "The Battle Of Stamford Bridge -April 10th 1625" ]. The first known settlement in Chelsea, Massachusetts was made by the Pilgrims in 1622. The town was named for Englishwoman Mary D’Avenant, who had married an American. In 1803, Chelsea became a part of Boston and remained so until 1959.
