Chelsea is located on the eastern edge of the city of Boston and is bordered by Arlington to the north, Quincy to the east, Somerville to the south, Wellesley to the west and Malden to the northwest. The first settled in Chelsea were two families who came overland from Connecticut in 1630; they named their new home "Milford." In 1775-76 for seventy days (beginning on September 13), troops under General Gage marched through Chelsea with cannon fire and drums beating as they passed through town streets lined with houses which had been vacated by patriots during that year's revolution. Many of these homes still stand today including one known as Gage's House which now serves as a museum open to all visitors free of charge. The community grew rapidly after incorporation in 1814 due largely to its location near railroad lines and other commercial enterprises which made it accessible for settlers seeking access to land or a new career opportunity. During World War II many Chelsea residents worked in munitions plants across New England while others engaged in agricultural pursuits such as raising chickens or goats on their properties or growing potatoes; some also served in military units during that conflict. After war ended many people returned to their day jobs but more than twenty businesses opened up around town during those years including several banks and apparel stores along with an active nightlife scene typical of small towns at that time. As new technologies emerged during this time period such as cannons powered by water power or air power, these new arms potential found use by militias throughout America (eager for protection from British forces) as well as armies abroad (in orderto conquer new land).
