Chelsea is a municipality in Massachusetts, located on the shore of Long Island. The population was 27,559 at the 2010 census. It is part of New York City. Chelsea was first settled in 1664 by English colonists as East Hampton. In 1824, it became a town and was named after Chelsea Palace in London. In 1898, it merged with Wallingford to form the current municipality of Chelsea. The name "Chelsea" comes from two places: one meaning 'village on the cliff' and one meaning 'a palace belonging to the queen'. The first reference to Chelsea came from Nicholas-Jacques Cartier in his account of his visit to America in 1585–86. He mentioned that there were three villages on Long Island called Cinque Terre (the five points), which he thought might be connected by a road leading down from Manhattan to these villages; this theory has been challenged but remains supported by historians. In 1664, English colonists founded what would become Chelsea as East Hampton on Long Island after finding an abandoned Indian village there. The town's first settler was John Westfall who arrived with his family in 1665 and built a house on what is now First Street near Sandy Hook Lake. By 1701, most of the town had been erected and it grew rapidly due to its good location connecting several inland towns such as Farmingdale and Watertown through land grants and trade connections with Great Britain. In 1824, when Chelsea joined Wallingford as a town within Middlesex County, it had a population of 10,000 people living mainly around Broadway between Old Hwy 9 south/west of present day Harrisonburg Road and Fourth Avenue north/east of present day Elmira Road junction). At its peak during the late 1800s – early 1900s when other municipalities on Long Island such as Huntington were growing too fast for their own needs – Stamford (then known as Wallingford) alone had over 20 businesses employing over 1,000 people including many prominent families like Groves & Co., Swift & Company (owned by Nathan Weeden), Dennison Manufacturing Company (owned by George Dennison), Litton Manufacturing Company (owned by Abraham Litton) etc.; all while also hosting events like horse racing meetings at Brookline Park between 1875-1876 or cricket matches played at Nassau Hall between 1888-1889 among others! 2A local paper article about life around 1925 can be found here: https://www2aamidstweetsarchive1aaronpaul928Sep25 25 .pdf

Chelsea, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,018 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Boston and is bordered by Easton to the north, Woburn to the east, Saybrook to the south, and Needham to the west. The name Chelsea comes from English settlers who arrived during King Philip's War in 1636. They named their new settlement after Cromwell's army that had recently crossed over into Massachusetts Bay from England. Chelsea developed as a farming community with many small businesses and churches along its main streets. In 1868, however, it became an incorporated city when Middlesex County contracted out its government to become a city-county under state law. During World War II Chelsea played an important role as one of two American military airfields servicing Suffolk County in New England; other was Forest Hills Airfield in Somerville. After the war Chelsea experienced rapid growth with development of housing and businesses including large shopping centers such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart (later Walmart), Belk Department Stores (now Macy’s), Ford Motor Company’s Lingen plant (now Lingenfelter Instrumentation), Unilever plc.'s creamery plant (now Unilever’s Maynard Plant) and John Fenton Paper Products Company which built what is now JFPP Holdings Incorporated In 2002-2004 there was much controversy over plans for a large shopping mall located adjacent to Yale University that would have taken away much needed open space within the town limits
