Chelsea, Massachusetts is a town located in Essex County, Massachusetts. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. In 2004, Chelsea's Green-Wood Cemetery became one of the first cemeteries to be certified by the National Cemetery Administration as being "energized." The cemetery has also been certified as an environmentally friendly cemetery by the United States Green Building Council. The town of Chelsea was founded in 1795 and named for General John Jacob Astor’s wife, Catherine de Bourgogne. It was first settled by Puritans who arrived from England in 1636. The family that founded Chelsea had Huguenot roots and were active in religious and social services throughout New England during the 1700s. After losing their land following the Revolution, they returned to Chelsea in 1802 and continued to live there until their death in 1840. The townspeople were active promoters of education through early years public schools which opened on February 10th, 1796 with 9 students attendinginder Grades 1-4 On July 14th of that year a schoolhouse was erected on lot #1 (now part of Olde Towne) within range of present day High Street which housed grades 5-8 until 1800 when it moved across street to School House Lane where it still stands today! A second school building known as “Newschool” built on what is now Park Avenue dates back to 1817 with grades 9-12; however this building too burned down on December 11th 1827 just three months after its construction! Notwithstanding these challenges Stamford Township erected 3 more brick buildings between 1830 and 1840 including a new high school (1838), Congregational Church (1851), & Masonic Hall (1860). All but Congregational Church were destroyed by fire except for Masonic Hall which still standing today adjacent to Stamford High School

Chelsea, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Chelsea was John Greenleaf Whipple who arrived in 1636. He built what is now called Whipple's Point on the eastern shore of Chelsea Lake. Harvard College graduate and Congressman Nathaniel Hawthorne also lived in Chelsea for a time during his undergraduate years at Amherst College before moving to New York City to become an author and critic. In 1831-32, Stamford lawyer and temperance advocate Amos Kendall bought 8 acres (3 hectares) of land west of the present-day town line for $1 from Joseph Medill. Kendall donated this land to Chelsea as its town square, which he designated "Medill Square." The first post office was established in 1792 and operated under the name "Hampden." When Russia became a republic after Napoleon's fall, Russia took over Boston Post Office operations and continued to use "Hampden" until 1795 when it changed its spelling to "Chelsea." The name may be derived from English General James Clinton's Charge against British Troops at Saratoga where he exclaims: "What new enemy have we met? This old ally - our friend - hath incurred upon us some very great reproaches!" In 1821, real estate developer Daniel Webster acquired 7 acres (2 hectares) east of Medill Square for $10 from Kendall for what would eventually become known as Webster Park . Webster had been interested in developing Chelsea since his days working on Jericho Hill near West Roxbury during his early twenties while still an undergraduate at Yale University . Clinton Street NW running through Chelsea today bears Webster's namesake because he pledged $10 towards building a road into the center of Chelsea using private funds augmented by subscriptions from local residents – one mile long with 6 lanes – that were raised enough money via ads placed throughout Suffolk County Clinton Street NW continues southward along what is now State House Road to meet Route 3 about 1/4 mile north of where it crosses State House Road into Queensbury . The route then turns northwestbound onto Broadway passing several small schools before reaching its northern terminus just east of Newtown Hospital , continuing northeast along Broadway past Government Center before ending at KFC outlet #5805 off I-93 exit 11A near Quincy Market

The town was chartered on July 12, 1692 by Governor John Winthrop. In 1711, the town became part of Middlesex County. In 1814, Chelsea merged with Lynn to form Lynn-Chelsea. On October 14, 1834, Chelsea merged with Somerville to form Somerville-Chelsea.
