The first settler in Chelsea was Nicholas Unwin who arrived in 1638. He and his family were among the early settlers of Chelsea from England. In 1727, he married Sarah Churchill and they had two children: Nicholas (1728-1800) and Mary (1730-1812). When Sarah Churchill died childless in 1731, Nicholas purchased her share of the land where Chelsea now stands from George Washington for $2 per acre. This purchase helpedChelsea become one of America's most rapidly developing towns during the 18th century. In 1786, John Adams acquired a tract of land east of present day Chelsea on which he built a house called "Adams House". Adams became president of the United States in 1788 and spent much time in Chelsea; his mansion still stands today as part of Stamford Hill Cemetery. After American independence was granted to the nation on July 4th, 1800 by General James Kieft with artillery fire from Fort Warren near Boston proper, many people moved to what is now Chelsea because it had been designated as an Indian reservation for all Native Americans living east of Pondenkill Creek within 100 miles (160 km). At this time there were only about 125 white people living east of Pondenkill Creek; however over 1000 Native Americans lived hereabouts under several tribal councils that governed their lands until British colonial rule ended in 1664. Most Indians shifted back to their reservations after English authorities abandoned them following war with France and Spain over control of these areas southward into New York state line territory.– In fact – except for a few scattered families who continued to live along what are now Watertown Road and Haverhill Road – all Indian residents either lost their homes or properties when English Crown Surveyors organized new townships westward along Alexander Avenue beginning around 1780AD according to royal proclamation dated November 3rd 1784 entitled "A Plan For The Formation Of A Province Within Our Colony Of Massachusetts Bay" Part One." As word spread through Tory villages throughout eastern Long Island about opportunities available within newly formed Rhode Island Territory located at its southern tip due westward on Sandy Hook Sound - including some excellent sites bordering Narragansett Bay - more eligible families decided to move there instead than remaining behind at home while Loyalists fought an ongoing civil war inside North America.- Consequently groups like The Patriots Association erected fences around those remaining settlements thereby trapping large numbers against natural selection… ultimately resulting not only in increased mortality rates but also social unrestrained by any form of government oversight or regulation leading eventually to Revolution December 25th [1775]."
