On July 1st, 1872, Chelsea was merged with Arlington Heights into one large municipality known as Arlington Heights-Chelsea. Many buildings still remain from this period including several churches and public schools as well as a Masonic Lodge #2 which sat on Meeting House Hill until 1978 when it moved to its current location off Cold Spring Lane. During World War II many residents worked at Arlington Naval Air Station located just east of the town limits; however most residents avoided combat because they were not trained or equipped to do so. However some brave men did serve their country during World War II including Sgt. Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin who became an astronaut; Pvt./Maj./USAR Sgt., Joseph Sileo who served as an intelligence officer with Code Pink; Pfc./Sgt./USMC James “Jimmy” Webb; Pfc./Lt./USN/A5C2 Wally Bunker who served aboard USS Enterprise during Operation Neptune Spear; Pfc./Warrant Officer 1st Class Darrell Wiegand who manned starboard engine room watch during Operation Desert Storm
