Chelsea, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,813 at the 2010 census. Chelsea is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is bordered by Cambridge to the south, Somerville to the west, Quincy to the north and Medford to the east. The town was first settled in 1635 by Puritans from New England. The town's name comes from a place called Chelsea on Long Island Sound which means "safe haven." When Stamford Bridge (now Chelsea) was built in 1666 as a crossing point for boats traveling between Boston and Providence, Chelsea became known as Stamford Bridgeport. In 1836, Chelsea became an incorporated village when it merged with nearby Lawrenceville. A post office was established in 1837 and remained open until 1959. The townhome industry took off after World War II because of easy access to good land and low prices for building materials; however, during the late 21st century there has been significant gentrification taking place with many high-end homes exiting the market or being bought by wealthier residents who have transformed Chelsea into one of Greater Boston's most expensive neighborhoods. In 1916–17, then-Mayor John F Kennedy gave a speech extolling what he saw as evident progressiveness in Chelsea since its incorporation: "Chelsea has become not only more prosperous than ever before but also more democratic than ever before...It [the] people of this community have not just done better than their neighbors; they have done better than anyone else in America." After his election victory that year over fellow Democrat James Moseley, Kennedy ordered city planners to look into ways to make Chelsea "[a] model community" where everyone would be treated equally regardless of social class or race. Municipal services were improved including streetlights at night while new parks were created such as Crescent Park and North Shore Park across from Yankee Stadium which helped spur development around these areas while providing evening entertainment opportunities for local families.
The town of Chelsea was first settled in 1638 by Henry Greathouse and his wife, Agnes. The firstingham meeting house was built in 1639. In 1737, the town granted a charter to the General Court. On November 15, 1786, Chelsea became a part of the new Massachusetts Bay Colony. On October 14, 1801, Chelsea voted to become an incorporated town. On December 12, 1802, the town passed an ordinance to establish a School Board. on January 8th 1803 the school board authorized the erection of a two-story brick school building at what is now Main Street and Walnut Street. The school was completed in 1805 and served as one of only two schools in Chelsea until it closed in 1865 when it merged with neighboring Westtown In 1830 Bostonians Andrew Eliot and George Lawrence founded The New England Journal which later became The Boston Globe
