The colonists named it after their patron saint, Chelsea (a small village near London). After only two years of operations as a town, Chelsea voted to dissolve itself on October 2nd of that year because its own charter did not provide for township government. On February 6th 1734 this vote was ratified by the General Court which disbanded all townships within Middlesex County save those created from merger with other townships or when special elections were called pursuant to section 9 of Article 3 of the Charter of Liberties & Property Reserved Among Weomen Of This Colony[2]. In 1835, when Chelsea merged with West Roxbury into what is now known asChelsea/East Montague Township,[3], it had a population of 597; however this number decreased over time due largely to declining agricultural production and epidemics such as smallpox that struck both towns during the 1830s and 1840s. As most residents worked in larger cities or carried out light manufacturing or service activities rather than farming or ranching there wasn’t much incentive for them to move away from their homes because they could still enjoy good quality life despite difficult living conditions outside urban areas at that time. Additionally there were no large businesses located around either borough so most people left Stamford more quickly than they arrived even though they would have enjoyed opportunities for better jobs if they had chosen to remain based on factors such as proximity to work rather than city lifestyle options available at the time[4]. However thanks largely to activism led by local ministers such as Rev George Higginson[5], starting in the mid-19th century many residents slowly started moving back into Stamford although some did leave permanently due primarilyto economic reasons like price increases associated withurban industrialization while others took advantageof offers from newly formed suburbs being developed just outside of Stamford borders without having any connection whatsoever with downtown Stamford[6]. During World War II members various organizations including American Legion Post #594 served together throughout central Massachussetts providing support services such as Casualty Clearing House (CCH), Air Raid Precautions (ARP), Fire Department and ambulance service until May 1945 when hostilities ended and all forces returned home[7]; eventually all post offices closed except CCH which continued operation until 1969 before becoming an information center operated by Northeastern University[8].
