In 1635, Samuel de Champlain founded the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts on the Fox River. From that time until 1825, Cambridge was one of the most important and thriving cities in New England. One of these immigrants was Captain James Cook who arrived in Boston in 1779 seeking fame and fortune as a navigator on HALF A COCKPITERS (a ship captained by Cook). In 1814–1815 Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a military reservation around what is now downtown Boston called Shawmut Peninsula after Major General Joseph Shawmut who had commanded American forces occupying Canada during the war years earlier In 1834 Harvard College opened its doors for students after almost two centuries of Jesuit teaching; it would become one of America's most famous universities and remains one of the world's leading research institutions today During World War II over 100 Bombardment Schools were located throughout Greater Boston including RAF Bovingdon nearBoston Common (now part of Milton) ; Trinity RTC (now Tufts Univ.) at Medford MA , Monmouth Junction Naval Air Station just outside Longmeadow MA (partly destroyed by bombing), Framingham RGDP (now Framingham State Univ.), North Reading RDGZ (now Northeastern Univ., now Emerson College), Winthrop Hall HSCSOA(later Wellesley Colleges), Belmont Abbey CCDZ( later Holy Cross Collage). Many buildings remain standing today such as: Griggs Chapel east side; Boylston Armory west side; Commonwealth Club building east side; Kendall Square Tower across from Freedom Trail Plaza This large number of locations led to some consolidation or relocation happening during World War II which can be seen in neighborhoods like Jamaica Plain which went through several name changes including Forest Hills/Braintree/Walthamstow etc.—all while being adjacent to bomb-damaged areas .
