Brockton, Massachusetts is a city located in the town of Brockton on the south side of Boston. The population was 60,814 at the 2010 census. Brockton is bordered by Lowell to the east and west, Quincy to the north, and Southborough to the south. Brockton was first settled in 1764 by English colonists who named it after Colonel John Brockman of Longfellow's poem "The Bridge over Jordan." In 1818, a group of businessmen led by Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased 4 square miles (10 km2) of land southeast of downtown for $5 per acre. Hawthorne named his new town after himself and built two churches and an academy in its initial years. In 1827, General Israel Putnam entered into a contract with Nicholas-Jacques Conte to build four roads from Boston through Brockton. The first road, which became known as Putnam Road, opened in 1830 and ran parallel to present-day State Route 3A. By 1840, all six roads had been completed except for what is now US 1 (Route 9). In 1843–44, Higginson Greenough built a wharf on Lake Winnipesaukee near modern-day Quincy for exporting goods from New England via boat. This fledgling port helped spur development along those same routes that would later become Interstate 95 and US 6

Brockton is a city in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 22,554 at the 2010 census. Brockton is the largest city in southeastern Massachusetts and one of the most populous cities in New England. It lies on the west bank of the river Medway within the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlement in Brockton was by men from Ipswich who built a cabin on what is now Hillside Road. On October 12, 1635, as part of Roger Williams' Bay Colony colonization effort, eleven men from Ipswich founded Brockton on land that now forms part of Quincy City. In 1638–39, settlers from Dorchester arrived and began settling around what is now downtown Brockton. In 1764, during the American Revolutionary War, Brockton was burned by British forces after patriot militiamen refused to surrender their weapons to British troops under order from General Thomas Gage. The town remained unoccupied for three days before British forces captured it and destroyed all but one building before withdrawing without taking any prisoners or loot. Brockton experienced increased development following its incorporation as a city in 1902 with access to better transportation and an expanded public library system; however, it also faced several controversies including gentrification which has led to declines in population density over time and challenges posed by traffic congestion and increasing cost of living indices relative to other similarly sized cities outside New England metropolitan areas
In 1692, the town of Brockton was established as a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The townsfolk were urged to settle in the area because of its fertile soil and good location for trade. In 1777, Brockton became an incorporated town. It grew rapidly during its early years and by 1812 it had a population of over 1,000 people. The town's growth slowed during the 19th century but it regained some of its lost prosperity after incorporation into the city of Boston in 1898. Brockton experienced significant growth during World War II with the influx of soldiers and their families. The population increased to over 20,000 by 1945 and peaked at 28,000 in 1960. However, rapid gentrification has since begun to take hold in Brockton which has led to a decline in population over the past few decades.
