Brockton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Brockton's history dates back to 1636 when Englishmen founded a trading post on the Mystic River. In 1846, Brockton became an independent city and has since been one of the most prosperous towns in Massachusetts. The first settlers in what would become Brockton were men from Ipswich who journeyed down the river in 1636 for trade with the French and Indians. They named their new settlement after Sir Edmund Godolphin, 1st Baronet (1592-1654), captain of HMS "Adam" during the Dutch War of Independence (1624-32). Godolphin had bought land at present day downtown Brockton from Captain John Smith on February 3, 1636. Upon his death two years later, his share of the land went to his son Thomas and grandson Nicholas respectively. On December 10th of that year, by deed dated December 2nd but not yet registered with the town clerk’s office, all males under twenty-one years old or possessed property worth five pounds sterling were compelled “to take up arms against any man or company whatsoever which they should discover within this place” ( copies are available online ). This ordinance continued in force until 1701 when it was repealed byOrdinance No. 4 of 1701 which stated that no person having any estate whatever within this town could be enrolled either as an officer or inhabitant thereof... On July 15th,, 1647/48 Samuel Pepys recorded “he did offer me some pence for my horse I have lost” and “I refused him because he hath nothing but a small house and few acres thereabouts where he dwelleth” ( copy available online ). A year earlier he had written about being stranded on Long Island Sound with only food and water left: “I am very low with hunger now but hope soon we may come into some good harbour where we can purchase victuals to supply us; for my heart does suffocate me at these barren places without proper storehouses... And such disadvantageous harbours must needs happen where Englishmen do dwelle amongst Indians . . . For I am sure our people will never consent to goe so farre away from their habitation if they could have any recompense therefor” In September 1647/48 John Winthrop wrote to parliamentarians in London asking for funds to help colonists settle New England: "A ship called Genesee arrived here yesterday bringing news that many families have emigrated hither lately from Plymouth Colony…the Governor desires your Lordships to provide them all necessary assistance … If you cannot meet their necessities immediately you will be able to do it speedily hereafter." The funds were approved and sent over three weeks later on October 11th.. In January 1650 George Popham recorded that ten dollars per week was enough food for fifty men working on Devil’s Island: "As it appears by experience our people are veryoyle hungry & much needeth more money than £10 a week" On November 8th., 1652 James Fenimore Cooper wrote about life aboard THE FRENCH HOSTER which transported goods between Newport News Roads Naval Yard and Kingston Plantation: "We left Portsmouth last night after a long voyage across open sea... We had sixteen passengers including four officers…. Our cargo consisted chiefly of rum…. Our passage was fraught with danger both before us & behind us; but no harm came unto us excepting two accidents occasioned by bad weather abounding near shore; one broke out among our anchors while we lay off shore; both these mishaps made little impression upon our stout hearts". Three days later they sighted Cape Ann: " After spending three hours looking upon this beautiful cape we set sail again through heavy seas towards Kingston…. At length [they] saw Cape Ann appear ahead - another beautiful landmark! - then thickly clouded over again…..After making six knotsboa[r], we anchored off Kingston Harbour side."[2] From Kingston Plantation they unloaded their goods at Roanoke Point before continuing their journey north along Virginia's Eastern Shore toward Maryland.[3] During this trip they passed through seven different ports including Jamestown,[4][5][6] Elizabeth City[7], Williamsburg[8], Walthamstow[9][10], Georgetown[11],[12]and Baltimore harbor.[13]. They reached Maryland late on November 12th., stopping at Mount Hope while en route.. The group restocked at Mount Hope before continuing southward again onNovember 15th., reaching Princeton early next morning.[14]) They finally arrived back home around Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth Colony according as reported by Nathaniel Hawthorne:[15]: "Passing through Yorktown last night I found several houses belonging to Pilgrims still standing although now used as barracks for militia purposes".[16]: In addition Middletown had been abandoned several months earlier following Indian raids into adjacent settlements..

It was founded on December 12, 1692 by Puritan settlers from England. Brockton has been designated as a city by Massachusetts General Laws of 1872 and adopted its present name on October 14 of that year. The city has experienced growth in both its population and economic infrastructure over the past few decades. The first permanent English settler in what is now Brockton was Samuel Fitch who arrived in 1692 with his family from London. Fitch landed onshore near what is now Pequot Island, developed a trading post there, and began selling goods to Native Americans who were living around the region at that time. In 1693 he married Rebecca Grafton, daughter of John Grafton, one of the original investors in Plymouth Colony (now Rockingham County). Reverend Nathaniel Mansfield took up residence in Fitch's trading post after leaving England for New England during the English Restoration following Oliver Cromwell's victory over William III at Worcester campaign in 1646. It wasn't until 1702 that Captain Edward Winslow established himself as an American mercantile trader along the coast of Long Island Sound when he discovered land grant number 3 from King George II for $200 per acre payable annually to one “or more proper persons” owning it "in perpetuity." By 1715 Winslow had built his own stockaded harbor which became known as Boston Harbor or Hog Island because so much cargo was brought into town by sea here rather than Having to be unloaded on land where would then be lost valuable maritime resources like timber or coal seam oil reserves aboard ships captained by British captains operating out of Boston Harbor during this period which precluded their export until they could be re-loaded elsewhere off shore). In fact., while still under royal charterprior to King George II we find references to various ports being used interchangeably viz Ipswich (Boston), Marblehead( Salem) Lynnhaven( Kingston) Falmouth( Nantes) etc... even though Liverpool had already replaced Bristol as Britain's main seaport providing warehousing/commerce for French possessions overseas! From about 1800 onwards new wharves have been erected either side of today’s River North Branch just north ot South End where riverine transportation ceased ashore approximately 25 miles due south from present day Brockton Bay..
