Brockton is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and has been around since 1630. The town was named for Nicholas Brocket, who died in 1628. In 1784, Brockton became part of Quincy and was incorporated as a separate village. In 1835, it became a part of Boston and was renamed Brockton again in 1886. The early history of the town can be traced back to 1630 when Nicholas Brocket founded Brocketon Manor on the south side of present-day Mass., just east of what is now Medford Square. At that time there were only three Indian villages in New England: Winthrop on Cape Cod to the west; Ipswich to the north; and Stratford on Long Island Sound to the south. However, because these areas had been subject to multiple raids by French colonists and Native Americans over many years, little evidence remains indicating which village founded which place first. What does remain however suggest that upon hearing about English trader John Winthrop's claims to have found an uninhabited island off his coast (the "Island" he called "Winchester"), some early inhabitants decided they would like a piece of this valuable land as well - even if it lay within hostile territory bordering Quebec (present day Canada). Accordingly, on December 12th 1597 - less than two months after Captain John Smith's landfall at Plymouth Colony - Nicholas' brother2 appointed him Managing Agent for Parts I & II (the so-called "First Colony") with power “to purchase or build any house or other estate whatsoever” within “this our new Province”3 - all but guaranteeing full occupancy by both Englishmen and their aboriginal partners should they choose not resist settlement 4 . Thus began what would become an unremittingly important tradition in New England: successive Englishman establishing themselves permanently among their own people – setting an example for future generations that would eventually lead to American independence 6 . One such man instrumental in making Brockton one of America's earliest settlements was Increase Mather who arrived here from England in 1636 as one of King James I's Assessors9 . After more than 25 years serving his homeland10 , Mather returned home aboard HMS Worcester during the height of Oliver Cromwell's reign 11 . Upon landing here he organized local militia service under Captain William Bradford12 before becoming Resident Magistrate – responsible for administering justice within his jurisdiction13 . It wasn't long though before Mather realized that he wanted more than just a quiet corner near shore – he wanted something bigger himself14 ! So soon after arriving back home from England he convened an Assembly meeting at which he proposed founding a permanent colony on Martha's Vineyard15 ; but due primarily to opposition from Govnmt officials led by De Witt Clinton16 –> who saw potential competition for available farmland –Mather instead petitioned King Charles I seeking royal sanction for building a second colonynearby17 . This time round things happened differently: Charles graciously okayed Mather's request18 ; and with help from fellow investors Samuel Adams19 (a Puritan doctor)25 ,John Morse26 (a Quaker surveyor)27and others28 –>Mather sailed out into Narragansett Bay with his original 200 men29 October 163724 .....and started building what would soon become known as Jamestown!4
