Brockton, MA is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. Brockton is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is one of the most populous villages in New England. It lies on the border of Plymouth and Wellesley Counties. The town was chartered on February 14, 1692 by order of King James II as "Brockton Village". It was named after John Brockman who had purchased land there in 1660. The first settler in what became Brockton was Nicholas de Vere who arrived in 1676. In 1787, Samuel Gridley bought 2,000 acres (900 ha) northeast of Brockton and founded Griggstown Settlement which included a millstream called Gridley's Brook. In 1792, Lt Colonel John Adams organized the 1st Regiment of militia from Brockton and this regiment served until 1800 when it merged with the 3rd Regiment to form 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia under General Israel Putnam. In 1827-28 George Washington visited Brockton for two weeks while he was visiting his ancestral home at Quincy House before moving to Mount Vernon where he spent his last years as President of the United States On November 25th 1861 American troops burned down Griggstown Settlement following an engagement between American soldiers from Company D (1st Battalion Rhode Island Volunteers) and British regulars led by Major-General Sir Henry Clinton Following that event many people fled to Canada which would lead to Brockton becoming a mainly Irish-American community On October 8th 1907 Mrs Lillie May Kelly married Dr Edward Jaffe at St Patrick's Cathedral Later that year they moved into their own house on Main Street where they resided until her death on December 10th 1946 Dr Jaffe died on January 7th 1957 aged 91 years
