Brockton is the seat of Plymouth County and it most recently had the status of a city. The first permanent settler in what is now Brockton was John Winthrop in 1630. Brockton's history begins with the American Revolution when General John Adams sent British troops to search for possible Patriots living in what then was part of Massachusetts. One such soldier, Samuel Adams, discovered and reported on an encampment of Patriot rebels near present-day Brockton. This event helped ignite the Revolution and set off a fire that would burn for over two centuries. In 1818, brick warehouses were built on Meeting Street to serve as storage for local farmers during the winter months; this proposal by Captain George Shaw led to development of Brockton as an agricultural center which would continue untilowntown buildings were constructed in the 1920s. The construction of Interstate 93 produced significant economic changes for Brockton over time. First came truck traffic from nearby Lowell; then came manufacturing jobs related to plastics and electronics; finally came professional and business people moving into downtown areas along with new housing developments beginning around 1970 known as "The Village". Downtown businesses have since closed or moved away while other sections have seen strong redevelopment including several high-rise apartment complexes completed since 2000 primarily serving young professionals working downtown who are not constrained by green space regulations that apply only within walking distance of their workplaces (a phenomenon often referred to as gentrification). Brockton's history dates back to 1635 when it was founded by Colonel John Davenport and his family as a small settlement on the east coast of Cape Cod. In 1797, Brockton became part of the new state of Rhode Island and its first mayor was Mayor George Gamache. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location near Boston and its commerce hub at Davenportville Landing on Narragansett Bay. In 1812, Brockton incorporated as a city under the name "New London". After years of struggles with malaria and other diseases, New London merged with Hartford in 1836 to become Hartford-Brockton-Bridgeport. The late 19th century saw some significant changes in Brockton as well; starting with incorporation as an independent city it underwent rapid growth in industries such as shipbuilding and brickmaking which led to increased GDP per capita (adjusted for inflation) by 1920 despite persistent economic depression within Rhode Island overall. However, during World War II both New London Bridge and downtown Brockton were bombed by Japanese forces resulting in serious damage including extensive loss of life although no buildings were destroyed outright.
