In 1827, one of Boston's first electric streetcar companies organized a passenger ride from what is now Quincy Market to Roxbury Center for just $1 per person per ride (the fare has not been increased since then). This event led to growth in streetcar operations throughout the city; by 1830 there were twenty-three different streetcar lines operating within Boston proper! The town annexed Randolph Municipal Court District No. 4 in 1892 after Randolph Township voted to secede fromBoston due to its refusal to annex into Worcester County. Randolph Township reincorporated as part of Brockton on February 12, 1896 with a population of 3,412 . In 1907–1908 plans were made for an airport south of Brockton but no action was ever taken due to lack of funding or opposition from local officials. In 1951 an airfield was built adjacent to present day Southwick Airport which served both military and civilian aircraft until it closed down in 1984. A new high school opened for students in nearby Arlington Heights on October 10th 1984 called Brookline High School after being funded by donations raised through bake sales and car wash days supported by community members

The town's nickname may be derived from its location near Springfield Common which served as a meeting ground for many local meetings and also served as a dumping ground for refuse from nearby businesses
