It became an incorporated town in 1852 and continued to be governed by vestrymen until 1919 when it became a city with its own government. The first mayor of Brockton was Amos Kendall. In 1916, J.P. Morgan set up his Chase National Bank here and quickly grew into one of the largest banks in New England with branches throughout East Coast cities such as Boston, New York City and Miami Beach/Fort Lauderdale. He donated land for the new campus of Brandeis University which opened in 1924 and remains one of America's most prestigious universities today. In 1970s Brockton experienced rapid growth due to waves of immigrants from Asia starting businesses such as Honda Motorsports Inc., NEC Corporation (later Hewlett-Packard), Takata Corporation (now part of Mazda) and others; however, this growth did not last long due to high levels of crime rates which made people wary of settling there permanently or investing their money here; instead they moved out towards more suburban areas where prices were lower and crime rates were lower also During the 1990s many large companies closed down or relocated away from Boston due to recessionary conditions but some continued operations like Nike who relocated their headquarters from Beavercreek Ohio to Springfield MA before closing shop all together in 2001 vacated over 1 million sq ft inside then again later that year announced plans to open another store outside downtown near IGA if all goes well[1]
