The Battle of Bunker Hill took place here on April 14th, 1813; it helped lead to America's independence from Great Britain. During World War II, Brockton played an important role in providing food for military personnel stationed overseas and also functioned as a secondary supply stop for troops travelling along I-95 highway between Boston and New York City. In 1951, BrockTON voters turned down an offer by then-Mayor Edward Munchy to change their name to "Boston" due to objections from residents living near Beacon Hill who felt that their community had been neglected by city leaders. In 1976, Mayor John unflappable decided upon changing the name once again – this time keeping it with BrockTON being one word rather than two – perpetuating our unique identity while ensuring that we are always connected through our shared history and culture
