The store soon became successful and it continued to be run by Winthrop until 1814 when it merged with another store, The Armory, which had been founded by Colonel John Brownell earlier that year. The first handguns sold at The Arsenal were pistols made by English maker John Rivington. In 1775, during the American Revolution, British soldiers raided The Arsenal and stole several thousand pistols from its customers. This led to the founding of the Second Continental Congress with representatives from all thirteen colonies convened there in Philadelphia on April 14th, 1775 – hence the name “Second Continental Congress” or “Shotgun Congress” for short (it wasn’t actually called that until after George Washington took office). At this meeting, delegates voted to adopt a resolution calling for Regulation of Firearms (which later became known as Gun Control Acts), which included ideas such as banning handguns except those manufactured under license from certain states (New York being one). In 1814, when The Armory merged with another store named The Liverpool Store near King Street between Beacon Hill and Tremont Streets (now Boylston Street), it also bought back all existing weapons inventory from Colonel John Brownell who had recently died at age 73 years old due to natural causes (although some guns still remain at Liverpool Store today). After purchasing back all of Brownell’s inventory, Ltd., as well as any patents or other deeds pertaining thereto whatsoever [and] depositing same with said Company [at] liberty within three days thereafter; Mr Clerk entered into an agreement with said Company for selling Said Arms; And began immediately upon taking possession thereof… pistol production commenced at once under said new management[.] After becoming manager at Liverpool Store himself (the first African Americanmanager in America), Joshua Nicholas started making rifles there as well – something that would only become common after Daniel Webster became Minister of War in 1825 and ordered more black men appointed into military positions across America following Reconstruction/Emancipation efforts spearheaded by President Andrew Johnson- though Nicholas definitely played a role therein too! After managing LiverpoolStore for about 5 years through 1828-1829- 1830-1831–Nicholas moved upstairs into what is now called “The Armoury Annexe” where he continued manufacturing rifles until his death in 1838 at the age of 82 years old due to yellow fever pandemic raging throughout New England during that time period! He is buried next door on King street behind Oneida Baptist Church….During 1916-1917 Mayor James Meehan sponsored plans for moving Nicholas' remains from their original burial spot on Commonwealth Avenue near City Hall southeast onto Park Square opposite Oneida Baptist Church so they could be interred closerto tax payers but these plans fell through after community outcry against secret burying away of an honest man only because he was an Ishmaelite Arab!
