Beverly, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 19,715 at the 2010 census. Beverly was founded in 1795 by General John Adams and named for Beverley (now Oxford) in Kent County, England. The first post office was established in Beverly on November 8, 1800. The town became incorporated as a village on October 12, 1824. It passed through several name changes before its current name of Beverly was adopted on July 11, 1959. The history of Beverly can be traced back to the early days of the American Revolution when members of the British Parliament were visiting America and saw how much progress had been made since they were last here two centuries earlier. General John Adams met with them and decided that this place should be named after him because he had helped lead America into independence from Great Britain. Heading up the effort to get this done was Joshua Quincy Marshall who also served as mayor from 1827 until his death in 1840 The town's early years were very difficult due to heavy competition from other towns that grew up around it such as Worcester and Manchester which all wanted to be called "Beverly". In 1847 the town voted unanimously to become an incorporated village instead of continuing to compete with these larger towns because they felt their location would allow them more access to resources and infrastructure while still being able to compete fairly with their neighbors. After many years of hard work by everyone involved including a committee chaired by Mayor O’Brien we reached our goal on October 12th 1944 finally becoming an officially incorporated Village under the jurisdiction of Worcester County Since then we’ve seen some amazing things happen both locally and statewide including: -The opening of ourCountywide Water Treatment Plant which increased water availability for residents across our Village -A new Library built within walking distance for residents & schoolchildren alike -A brand new Police Department created specifically for Beverly -An increase in job opportunities thanks to waves of immigrants arriving over the past few decades -And most importantly; countless individual donations which have allowed us To keep everything running like it always has!
