In 1814, when Boston was renamed New York City after king George III's decision to join Britain during the Napoleonic Wars, many people moved to take advantage of that change. Some residents decided to move back into their old homes while others started building new homes on what is now North Quincy Street. In 1828, Beverley voted unanimously to secede from Massachusetts and become its own independent state called Rhode Island; however this plan didn't work out very well and soon after Rhode Island became an United States territory (1861). Beverley remained part of Massachusetts until 1893 when it merged with other towns along Route 128 in order to form just one large community named Beverly Hills which continues today as a separate municipality within Greater Boston
