Beverly, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 27,878 at the 2010 census. Beverly was first settled in 1650 as part of the Dartmouth Colony. It was chartered as a town on April 21, 1872. In 1917, Beverly became one of the United States municipalities granted city status by President Woodrow Wilson. It has since grown to include a large area within Worcester County and beyond. The town center is located just east of Interstate 95 and north of Route 495; it is bordered to the south by Northfield and to the west by Southborough. Beverly's ZIP code is 01702-2728. The median age for residents was 37 years at the 2010 census; this compares with an average age of 50 years in Worcester County as a whole (including Boston). The racial makeup of Beverly was 98% white, 1% black or African American, 0% Native American/Alaska Native, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 2% from other races. Hispanic or Latino residents constituted 1% of the population. The history of Beverly begins with its founding in 1650 as part of Dartmouth Colony when English colonists arrived in what is now Worcester County from Rhode Island*. In 1781*, after British troops burned down much of Providence* during their War for Independence*, many Dartmouthians migrated northwestward into what are now Worcester and Hampshire Counties seeking new land*. They soon founded two more towns: North Reading (1782) and West Springfield (1783). It wasn't until 1872 that Beverly became one of three towns Granted City Status by President Woodrow Wilson following passage of legislation entitled " Municipal Jurisdiction Noиd Act". This act gave cities such as Boston municipal rights equivalent to those enjoyed by rural villages while also granting them some power over local affairs including zoning ordinances* which made it possible for Beverly to build up its infrastructure such as streets and sewers.* In 1917 vote among citizens determined that they would like to become one city under one name** [*Note: This designation change did not come about through legislation but rather because several other surrounding communities had already taken on this name]. On April 21st *of that year* Mayor J F White announced that "Beverly" would be used both honorifically and informally throughout all areas thereof** [*This began occurring on July 25th so that all mentions hereafter must date back at least 7 days]. Beverly was first settled in 1630 by Puritans. The townspeople were given a charter in 1635 and began to build their homes. They named their new town Beverly after the estate of Sir John Beverly, 4th Baronet, which they acquired from charity. In 1764, the first school was built in Beverly and the town became a part of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The population grew rapidly during the early 1800s and by 1820 it had reached 20,000 people. In 1825, Beverly became a city and was renamed after President James K. Polk.
