The population was 1,552,496 as of 2019. The area now known as Beverly was first settled by Native Americans in 1630. The first English settlement here was called Beverley after Sir John Beverley who explored this region during the early 1600s. In 1801, Beverly became part of Middlesex County and was annexed into Worcester County in 1820. Beverly experienced rapid growth following its incorporation into the commonwealth as a town on November 8, 1827. Beverly’s growth continued through its years as an incorporated town until it became a city on November 8, 1919 following passage of Chapter 114 of the General Laws of Massachusetts which granted cities status within the state. During its time as a city, Beverly experienced significant changes including the arrival of waves of immigrants from southern Italy and Romania in 1880-1881 and German immigrants in 1912-1914; both waves helped contribute to increasing commercial activity and crime rates in downtown Boston during these years. In 1922, when Boston Mayor James Michael Hynes proposed that all municipalities within Boston be merged into one municipality with greater powers under his idea called “Hynes Plan” many residents objected fearing that their neighborhoods would be lost without their respective municipal governments; however, due to overwhelming support from City Council members and citizens alike Beverly successfully passed an ordinance merging with neighboring Roxbury on September 10th 1922 becoming one large community with enhanced services such as sewerage and police coverage. The post-war period saw another wave of immigrants arrive starting around 1945 which led to increased business opportunities for businesses such as garment manufacturers along with new housing developments such as Regency Towers (now part of Harvard University) which were built on land formerly used for agricultural purposes. Despite this increase in business activity there was also some violence associated with young gangs beginning circa 1950s until finally ending around 1970s when social programs were put into place to reduce crime rates among inner city youth

During the Depression years, Beverly experienced significant decline, however, it has since resumed its growth trend and now boasts a population of over 200.
