Beverly, Massachusetts is a city in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 25,977 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth largest city in Massachusetts and the third largest town in Worcester County. Beverly was founded by Puritans in 1643 as West Beverly Plantation. The name of the town may be derived from "Beverly" (a place near London) or "Worchester". The original white settlers were mainly farmers who grew corn and beans for market. Some of them built mills around 17th-century West Beverly Falls which gave its name to that stream. The early years of Beverly's history were difficult. A series of natural disasters struck the community during the 18th century: an ice age caused severe flooding that destroyed many homes and bridges; a fire destroyed most of downtown in 1787; and a tornado killed six people on October 5, 1807. However, these tragedies did not dampen Beverley's spirit though they did cause some restructuring of the community's government. In 1800, John Davenport erected a mill complex at what is now known as Watertown Square which helped revive Beverly’s economy after years of decline due to distance from markets and other sources of commercial activity. In 1850, when Worcester County was created out of part of Middlesex County, Beverly became one of its first townships with a population under 10,000 residents In 1860 it had become an incorporated village with a population over 10 thousand On January 1st 1880 voters approved incorporation into the new Worcester County . In 1888 Beverley became oneida Township when all but two villages within it accepted annexation into Oneida Township

Beverly is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritan separatists from Increase Mather's Boston Colony. Beverly developed as a small farming village until it became an incorporated town on March 14, 1868. The town's name comes from Beverley Fields in neighboring Woburn. The area that now Beverly was originally part of what is now Worcester County and included today's downtown and most of the villages around it including Asbury Park and West Beverly Hills. In 1636 two men named John Gage and Thomas Hutchinson moved to this area from Ipswich, England with their families. They were among the many colonists who left for New England during King Philip's War (1635-1638). One of Gage's sons, Samuels Gage, married Mary Whitehouse who had come over with her parents from Framingham in 1634/35; they had six children together: three boys and three girls. SamuelGage died young in 1642 while serving as sergeant major under Colonel John Wade at the Siege of Taunton against the Narragansetts led by Attuck Indians but his widowMary continued to live there with her four children until she died in 1648 after giving birth to another son also named SamuelGage Jr.. In 1712 William Petty traded goods with the Narragansetts near present day Beverly for goods they had brought across Lake George so he knew about them and he built a cabin here which still stands today on Jericho Road just north of Interstate 95 exit 15A (Route 124). In 1802 Beverly voted to become an incorporation townsite when it split off from Woburn Township; it became one of only eight such townships statewide that year. On April 4th 1865 Burrell Garland took office as its first mayor followed by Hiram Barnes on May 1st 1865 After World War I most residents left for various reasons: jobs out west or war service overseas etc., but some returned starting in 1928 when Shirley Temple moved out due to health problems caused byophobia which Byers diagnosed during her childhood days growing up near West Beverly Hills - then called "upperWB" Finally leaving behind mostly white Anglo-Saxon Protestants whose values differed markedly from those they experienced back home continued into recent decades through crime rates high school graduation rates below state average% race percentages above state average% black representation even though percentage has increased slightly since early 2000s while jobs have decreased although citywide percent growth has been consistent
