Beverly, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Leominster–Middlesex Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Beverly was founded by Capt. John Smith in 1630 and named for Sir Francis Drake's daughter who had married one of Smith's crewmen. The first settler of Beverly was Richard Bradford, who arrived in 1635 from England with his family and built a house on the present site of North Avenue. Bradford also held land grants from the General Court of Massachusetts dating back to 1637 and were used for agriculture and other purposes until 1802 when they were sold to Nathaniel Hawthorne and others. Beverly soon became an important commercial center due to its location on Route 2 and its sandy soil which made it easy to cultivate plants such as corn, beans, tobacco, potatoes, pumpkins, turnips and other vegetables. In 1795 a canal was dug through the town providing water transportation for local farmers while also enabling merchants located along Route 2 to reach new markets far beyond Boston or Providence. By 1800 Beverly had become an extremely large community with over 1,000 residents (including 300 children) living in 30 homes scattered throughout six square blocks bounded by State Street on the north; Union Street on the east; Broadway on the south; School Street on the west; and Center Avenue on the northwest corner of which stood Jenner's Bank (now Verizon Wireless headquarters). In 1815 that commerce shifted from personal property ownership to stock ownership when George Washington purchased interest in The Hartford & scores of others during his Farmington Visit including many pioneers who would serve as governor later that year: James Kneeland (of Enfield), Lawrence Collins (from Pittsfield), Simon Bradstreet (from Exeter), Jabez Putnam (now Jamestown resident), Increase Litchfield (of Southbridge) et al.. Mr. Washburne then leased 4 lots adjoining Mr Kneeland’s lot within ½ mile from neighbor where he resided but did not build until after he had removed all stops at Amboy Bridge leading thence into Ipswich into Saco River Valley – long before any public road was laid out or even Ide Road today! For years this spot near Pasture Road served as home stop for stage drivers en route between Worcester & Boston stopping here at night time right upon reaching Amboy Bridge thereby avoiding dangerous “bridges” crossing Ipswich river! The first settlement in Beverly was made on the site of present day Beverly Center by John Winthrop and his followers in 1630. The town of Beverly was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1853. It became an independent city on July 1, 1870. On April 15, 1916 a fire destroyed much of the downtown business district in what is now known as the Great Fire of 1916 disaster. The damage amounting to $1 million caused many people to leave Beverly for fear that it would become another Detroit or Buffalo with similar losses. During World War II Beverley served as one of only two locations in Massachusetts where troops were quartered during The war effort; Fort Meade and Camp Dunlap were closer to Boston but not equipped with airfields so they functioned as troop training bases instead. In 1966 Beverly voters passed a referendum which banned smoking indoors within city limits effective January 1st that year as part of then City CouncilStatute No 6-66 which also stated that no person shall operate any vehicle without having first obtained an operator’s license from said municipality

Beverly, Massachusetts was first settled in 1620 by Sir Nicholas Warren. The town was originally called Warwick and then Beverly. In 1692, the town was renamed Beverly after John Beverly, 1st Baron De La Warr's estate in Devon, England.
