After 1945 however, although there were sporadic attempts at revival over subsequent decades due to changing demographics (mainly post-war baby boomers), Beverly’s economy slowly began to decline from the mid-1980s through most of this century as manufacturing jobs declined in Bridgeport while new service industries such as technology and electronic media moved into town. Today, however, despite continuing various challenges faced by many small towns throughout central Connecticut during this period (most notably lack of affordable housing) Beverly has begun experiencing modest but steady growth in population from both recent arrivals (primarily millennials) who have found work opportunities hereabouts as well as more recent immigrants drawn by its strong economic prospects relative to other large towns near Boston or New York City

Beverly was founded in 1636 by Nicholas Wigglesworth. The town grew rapidly, and by 1784 it had a population of over 1,600. By 1800 Beverly had developed into an important commercial center with its own academy, library, and hospitals. In 1837 Beverly became the first town in Massachusetts to be incorporated as a city.
